Why Our Work Matters

At the time of this writing, our city and country are experiencing massive turmoil due to widespread recognition that structural racism has created and reinforced disproportionate harms for Black people with regard to police violence, health, education, income, and access to opportunity. Heteronormative and ableist biases also affect disparities for those who do not fit such norms. While these harms may be perpetuated unintentionally, naming them and intentionally working together to redress them allows us to support our students and their families in reaching their full potential.

We recognize that as members of a school community in Portland, Oregon, Le Monde educators, families, and administrators must work in a way that is accountable to the patterns of bias and disenfranchisement perpetuated historically by educators, families, and administrators who compose Portland Public Schools.
